Give Us This Day

I prayed this day for daily bread and crickets,

The Lord did not respond,

And I wept and despaired in the slough of despond.

Then I prayed and asked Him why

He had left me high and dry

And this was His reply:

Calcium was once in short supply,

So, governments thought it wise to fortify,

Resulting in the wiping out of rickets.

But what is lacking now?

Not nutrition from a cow,

Can’t you see that I’d be mad

When Caesar thinks it wise to add,

Bugs to the staff of life?

Comprehend my frustration,

At this transubstantiation

Isn’t there sufficient strife

In the world already?

Without making bread into something less bready,
