When you take away philosophy, religion,
The higher aims of art
Then you also take away
The way we know ourselves apart.
And knowing our apartness
Is the basis of our sanity.
We can’t reduce our kind
To basic biology.
For when we try, it seems,
We offer an apology
For all that is abhorrent,
In our vile inhumanity.
