I think I’ve heard it said before
That age permits one to discern
Which thoughts one really should ignore
And which are best, it makes one learn
To raise them up inside one’s mind.
I think I’ve also heard it said
One’s real worth can’t be defined
But if the thoughts within my head
Were measured, weighed and rightly judged
I think I would not prove unwise
By others, I would not be grudged.
This thought consoles and satisfies.
And yet ere long, my doubts are back,
The truth jumps out and gives a slap,
My self esteem destroyed, turns black,
For though I know I have the knack
Of thinking wisely, thinking well
It’s not my thoughts on which I dwell,
It’s everything I do is crap.
